Vienna, various music clubs [ENA] The 16th KlezMORE festival took place this November, starting from the 7th of November and going until the 24th of November, in various locations and districts of Vienna. The festival took place in various locations, among them the most renown ones such as Porgy and Bess, Metropol, Filmhaus Kino Spittelberg, Theater Akzent, Zentrum Im Werd, Vindobona or Sargfabrik.

The goal of the festival was to bring the world known artists to Vienna and to promote the Klezmer music which has its roots in the traditional Jewish music and integrates innovations of modern music and highlights of various cultural backgrounds. Klezmer is the traditional music which was introduced by Ashkenasi Jews from the Central European Countries. The music, which appeared during the 15th century, has its roots in religious traditions. Previously this kind of music was mainly played during the weddings and festivals. Since 1970ies the klezmer music is experiencing vivid revival, especially in USA, driven by new research. Today the klezmer music is performed by bands of various musical directions, including jazz, rock and blues.

The festival started from the world renown group “Klezmatics” which recorded the Eastern European Jewish music for over 30 years and changed the face of the contemporary Yiddish culture. The “Eve’s Women Band”, another group which opened the festival, combines the Jewish melodies with a variety of ethnic styles from Balkans, Morocco and Middle East as well as from various musical movements such as Jazz or Rock. The festival continued with variety of music of top quality and successful trans-continental cooperation. For example, “Socalled”, from Canada, who is a world renown Hip Hop producer, musician and filmmaker, and “Lungau Bigband” from Austria jointly took the publicum to a magic world of Jewish art and theatre songs.

Geoff Berner, who is a Jewish – Canadian accordion player, singer, song writer and novelist successfully brought together a combination of Jewish songs and humor over various modern days events in a turbulent and good-mood creating event. The festival ended with “Kleztory” performance which is one of the most dynamic and musically creative klezmer bands worldwide. The band combines the richness of the traditional klezmer music with various arrangements involving jazz, classical music and blues, which gives to the music of “Kleztory” its emotional deepness mixed with humor and energy.

The closing performance of the “Grossmütterchen Hatz & Klok” was a highlight of the festival with a variety of music which sounded like an artistic trip through Croatia, Serbia, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. The 17th KlezMore festival will take place the same time in Vienna, one year later, in 2020. The festival is without doubts a good reason to visit Vienna, to get to know its rich multicultural heritage and to escape the November gray in a joyful and dynamic klezmer music.
