Gugging Museum [ENA] The outstanding loans in this exhibition, which provide this extraordinary view of Naive Art, all come from the Infeld Collection. The renowned music string manufacturer Peter Infeld (1942 - 2009) and his mother Margaretha Infeld (1904 - 1994) began collecting art in the mid-1960s. His interest in Naïve art led the collector to the Croatian village of Hlebine, where he acquired his first works by Naïve artists.

For him it was: "A beautiful experience to see how people work there, how they live, how they milk their cows and at the same time wield a fine paintbrush", according to the report from that time. From these first encounters, lifelong friendships developed, such as with Ivan Generalić. For the collector Peter Infeld, naivety in the art historical sense by no means meant a lack of academic education. For him, it stood much more for immediacy, unselfconsciousness, the desire to discover the world and being untouched. After his death, his widow Zdenka Infeld continued the family's collecting activities.

Today, this central Austrian collection includes Naive art from Croatia and other countries, Art Brut, works of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism, Pop Art and Thangkas (Buddhist meditation images from Tibet). In order to make the Infeld Collection accessible to a broader public, Peter Infeld built two representative Peter Infeld built two representative cultural centres in Halbturn in Burgenland and in the idyllic town of Dobrinj on the Croatian peninsula of Krk, which have been showing changing parts of the collection with free admission since 2000. The current project now brings important masterpieces to Maria Gugging.
