Centroamérica by Lagartijas tiradas al sol
Wiener FestWochen [ENA] The Mexican collective Lagartijas tiradas al sol returns to the Wiener Festwochen with Centroamérica, a poignant exploration of personal and political narratives from Central America. Staged at Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom, this 90-minute performance weaves together documentary elements and theatrical storytelling to depict the journey of a Nicaraguan woman forced into exile under Daniel Ortega's regime.
Her request for the artists to bury her son, who died of COVID-19 in Nicaragua, adds a deeply personal layer to the narrative. Performed in Spanish with German and English surtitles, Centroamérica combines text, video, archival footage, and theatrical invention to create a multifaceted portrayal of Central America's socio-political landscape. The production traverses from the dense jungles of the Darién Gap to militarized borders influenced by U.S. policies, reflecting on revolutions, shared futures, and the indomitable spirit of the people.
The minimalist stage design by Sergio López Vigueras, complemented by evocative lighting, provides a versatile backdrop that seamlessly transitions between various settings and moods. Luisa Pardo and Lázaro G. Rodríguez deliver compelling performances, embodying multiple characters and narratives with authenticity and emotional depth. Centroamérica stands as a testament to the power of theatre to illuminate complex histories and personal stories. By intertwining individual experiences with broader political contexts, Lagartijas tiradas al sol offers audiences a nuanced perspective on the challenges and resilience of those affected by displacement and dictatorship.
