Wiener FestWochen [ENA] Belgian choreographer Miet Warlop’s Inhale Delirium Exhale, presented at Halle E in MuseumsQuartier (Vienna) from June 14th–16th, was an exhilarating artistic spectacle celebrating imagination, emotion, and communal presence. From its opening wave of motion, the performance submerged the audience in a visual tidal wave: six dynamic performers moving in unison and counterpoint, interwoven with vibrant fabrics—6,500 metres of textile transforming the stage into a living, breathing ecosystem.

Under Warlop’s direction, the fabrics ballooned, wrapped, and cascaded across the stage, becoming expressive bodies themselves—a poetic manifestation of human fears, desires, and secrets, brought into bold relief. The choreography reimagines the ancient Greek chorus for our fragmented modern world: a dissonant yet unified community whose collective voice becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Every gesture—from sweeping waves to intimate pauses—felt meticulously crafted and rawly authentic, radiating deep empathy and vibrant theatrical energy.

Musically, the pulsating electronic textures (in collaboration with DEEWEE and sound designer Ditten Lerooij) heightened the visual spectacle, creating a visceral emotional throughline that amplified each surge of movement and color. The production team—scenographers Mattis Clement, Elias Demuynck, light designer Henri Emmanuel Doublier—worked in perfect synchronicity. The result: a poetic, immersive universe where every textile fold, every shadow, every beat coalesced into a cohesive sensory journey.

In just one hour, Inhale Delirium Exhale delivered a profound emotional impact and a visually stunning, deeply resonant performance. The experience unfolded like a living tapestry, where rhythm, movement, and pulsating color became tools of collective storytelling. It was a triumphant affirmation of the human spirit’s ability to find cohesion in fragmentation, to make meaning through shared expression. Through the dynamic interplay of fabric, sound, and ensemble choreography, the piece transformed chaos and uncertainty into sources of surprising beauty, compassion, and strength. This was more than a performance—it was poetry in motion: alive, generous, and unforgettable in its urgency and emotional clarity.
